Your kids don’t need to sit still, smile on command, or be on their best behavior for us to create beautiful photographs.
One of the most common things I hear from parents before a family session sounds something like:
“My toddler is WILD.”
Or…
“I just hope everyone cooperates.”
And I get it. You’ve spent time choosing outfits, getting everyone dressed, fixing hair, packing snacks, and somehow getting the entire family out the door on time. Of course you want the session to go well.
But I want you to know something before you ever step in front of my camera:
Your kids do not need to be perfectly behaved for me.
In fact, I don’t really want them to be.
I’m Not Expecting Your Kids to Sit Still
Family photos have changed a lot from the days of everyone standing in a straight line, looking at the camera, and saying cheese.
We’ll absolutely get a few photographs of everyone looking at me—because Grandma deserves that framed family photo too. 😉
But after that?
I want your kids to move.
I want them to run toward you, climb into your arms, play with Dad, twirl their dress, make each other laugh, and show me those little pieces of their personalities that make them them.
Some of my favorite photographs happen in the moments when nobody is trying very hard to take a good picture.
“But What If My Toddler Has a Meltdown?”
Then your toddler has a meltdown. 🤎
Little kids have big feelings. They’re meeting a new person, they’re somewhere unfamiliar, and suddenly their parents are asking them to do things they don’t normally do while a lady with a giant camera follows them around. 😂
Sometimes they need a minute.
We’ll take a break. We’ll snuggle with Mom. We’ll explore. We’ll change what we’re doing. And sometimes I’ll completely abandon whatever I had planned because your child has decided something else sounds much more fun.
That’s okay.
You don’t need to apologize to me, and you definitely don’t need to spend the entire session worrying about whether your child is “behaving.”
I’ve photographed enough little ones to know that going with them usually works a whole lot better than fighting against them.
Connection Photographs Better Than Perfection
When you look back at your family photographs years from now, I don’t think you’ll care whether everyone followed directions perfectly.
You’ll notice the way your little girl’s hand still fit inside yours.
The way your son threw his head back when Dad made him laugh.
The curls that disappeared as they got older.
The missing baby teeth.
The way your toddler always wanted to be held by you.
Those are the things I’m looking for.
Of course I want to create beautiful photographs for you. But more than that, I want to create photographs that actually feel like your family.
And your family isn’t perfect.
It’s silly and loud and affectionate and occasionally chaotic—and that’s exactly what makes it worth remembering.
Your Job Is Just to Love on Your Kids
You don’t need to spend your session telling everyone to smile or look at the camera. In fact, I’ll take care of that part.
Instead, look at your babies.
Hold them. Kiss them. Chase them. Laugh with them. Scoop them up when they ask to be held.
If I need everyone looking at me, I’ll get their attention.
Your job is simply to be present with the people you love.
Because when parents relax, kids usually relax too—and that’s when we get the photographs that feel effortless and real.
This Season Doesn’t Need to Be Perfect to Be Worth Photographing
Maybe you’re in the toddler years right now.
Maybe someone is always running away.
Maybe getting everyone dressed feels like an Olympic event.
Maybe your youngest wants to be held constantly and your oldest has suddenly decided smiling normally is impossible. 😂
Book the photos anyway.
Because one day, the things that feel a little chaotic right now are going to be the things you miss.
You don’t need perfectly behaved kids.
You don’t need a perfect family.
You just need your family, exactly as they are in this season.
And I’ll take care of the rest. 🤎
If you’ve been putting off family photos because you’re worried about how your little ones will do, consider this your permission to stop stressing about it.
I’m a Houston family photographer serving families throughout Houston, The Woodlands, Conroe, Montgomery and surrounding areas, and I’d love to document this season for you—wild toddlers and all.
