Because the most meaningful photos aren’t always the perfectly posed ones.

When you think about your favorite memories with your family, what comes to mind?

Maybe it’s the way your toddler wraps their little arms around your neck. The way your husband makes the kids laugh without even trying. The tiny hands reaching for yours, the silly faces, the belly laughs, and all those little moments that make your family yours.

Those are the things worth remembering.

And when it comes to family photos, I believe those moments deserve just as much attention as the beautiful, everyone-looking-at-the-camera portraits.

Your family photos should feel like your family. Not a perfectly curated version of you, but the beautiful, genuine, joy-filled season of life you’re living right now.

Here are a few ways we can make that happen.

1. Let Go of the Expectation of Perfect

I know how much goes into preparing for family photos. You’ve coordinated outfits, gotten everyone dressed, planned around naps, and probably reminded your kids a dozen times to smile and listen.

But here’s something I want you to know before you ever step in front of my camera: your kids don’t have to be perfectly behaved for us to create beautiful photos.

Some of my favorite images happen in the in-between moments. When your toddler runs into your arms, when everyone bursts into laughter, or when your little one needs an extra snuggle.

Those moments aren’t interruptions to your session. They’re part of your story.

2. Focus on Connection, Not the Camera

Of course, we’ll capture those classic family portraits that deserve a spot on your walls. But some of the most meaningful images happen when you forget I’m even there.

Hold your babies close. Kiss their cheeks. Whisper something silly in their ears. Pull your spouse in for a hug.

You don’t have to spend your entire session looking at my camera and smiling.

Instead, I want you to spend time loving on the people who mean the most to you.

I’ll take care of the rest.

3. Let Your Kids Be Themselves

Does your toddler love being tossed into the air? Does your daughter insist on twirling every time she wears a dress? Does your little boy have the biggest, most contagious laugh?

Let’s capture that.

I love incorporating little pieces of your children’s personalities into your family session. Whether that means running through a field, playing a game, or simply giving them a few minutes to explore, allowing kids to be themselves creates the most genuine moments.

One day, those little quirks and personalities will look a little different.

And I think you’ll be so thankful we documented them exactly as they were.

4. Choose a Setting That Feels Comfortable

Your session location can play a big role in how your photos feel.

Maybe your family loves being outdoors, surrounded by beautiful trees and open spaces. Maybe you feel most at home curled up together on the couch, or perhaps you love the simplicity of a beautiful, light-filled studio.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

When planning your session, we’ll choose a setting that complements your family and the overall feeling you want your photos to have.

The goal is to create an environment where you can relax, connect, and simply enjoy being together.

5. Remember What These Photos Are Really For

I think it’s easy to get caught up in wanting everything to look just right.

The outfits. The hair. The smiles. The perfect family photo for your Christmas card.

And while I absolutely want you to have beautiful images you’re excited to share, I also want you to think about what these photos will mean 10, 20, or even 30 years from now.

Someday, you won’t remember whether your toddler cooperated for every photo or whether someone’s hair was out of place.

You’ll remember how little they were. How perfectly they fit in your arms. The way their tiny hands held yours.

You’ll see the love that filled your home during a season of life that somehow passed much too quickly.

That’s what we’re preserving.

Your Family, Just as You Are

As a mom and photographer, I know how quickly these seasons come and go. And I know how easy it is to put off family photos until life feels a little less chaotic.

But the truth is, there’s beauty in the chaos, too.

You don’t need perfectly behaved children, perfectly coordinated outfits, or a picture-perfect season of life to have family photos worth treasuring.

You just need your people.

My heart behind every family session is to create images that feel genuine, meaningful, and true to the family standing in front of my camera.

Because years from now, I don’t just want you to remember what your family looked like.

I want you to remember what it felt like to be together.
